Clepington Parish Church, Dundee
Sunday
27th October 1968
Overture:
"Die Meistersinger"
Andante Cantabile (String Quartet) Coronation March (Le Prophete) Rondino (Romeo and Juliet) Poco Allegretto (Symphony No.3) |
Wagner
Rachmaninoff Tschaikowsky Meyerbeer Constant Lambert Lehar Brahms Strauss |
I deliberately chose
this old programme as I had been impressed as a young
Cathedral chorister by the playing of John Gomersall
F.R.C.O., a semi-retired organist who, although in his
60s, played with great flair and panache. He had
been in the habit of including the odd transcription of
orchestral works in his recitals. This no doubt
reflected his own youthful beginnings in the early 1900s
when the only place one could hear orchestral music live
was at local organ recitals, touring orchestras seldom
venturing outside the major cities. On looking over the transcriptions in my possession, I decided that this series in 1968 should not only revive this custom but indeed include one recital devoted entirely to works which were not originally for organ. This recital, then, was not intended for lovers of organ music but to give maximum pleasure and fun both to the general public and myself. |
